SIXTEEN
MONDAY, 11 MARCH
Lauren and Matt escorted Brendon Evans to the entrance of the station and then went upstairs to speak to the team.
âOkay, everyone, we now have three missing women. The latest, Hannah Gifford, didnât return home after going to a nightclub with a friend. Sheâs twenty-nine and an event planner.â She took the pen from the whiteboard and wrote up the womanâs name. âTamsin, please will you put up on the screen the photo of Gifford that I forwarded to you, and also images of the other two women.â
âYes, maâam.â
In a few seconds the screen lit up and the photos were staring back at them.
âWhat stands out?â Lauren asked, scanning the room.
âNothing,â Billy said after a few seconds. âTheyâre all very different in looks and age.â
âAnd in occupation,â Lauren said. âSo, whatâs that telling us?â she encouraged.
âUmm⦠that they were just random victims? They were in the right place at the wrong time,â Billy said. âOr should that be the wrong place at the wrong time? Do you think theyâre dead, maâam, and we now have a serial killer?â
âWe canât exclude that possibility, but I donât want to jump the gun. Whoever has them might be keeping them somewhere,â Lauren said, not wanting the team to give up hope about finding the women alive, even if she was already assuming the worst.
âExperts on serial killers say that they usually have an âideal victimâ in their mind based on race, gender, looks, or something else about them,â Clem said.
âSo, you donât think thatâs what weâve got then, because our victims are different?â Billy asked, turning to the other officer.
âResearch points out that often serial killings seem random at first because victims have something in common which no one realises straight away, apart from the killer themselves.â
âExactly. Thank you, Clem,â said Lauren. âThereâs almost definitely something linking the three of them that weâre missing. And thatâs what I want you all to concentrate on. Look for anything, however inconsequential it might seem, that ties them together. Sergeant Price and I are heading out to the Magenta nightclub, where Hannah Gifford went on Saturday night.â
