SIXTEEN

MONDAY, 11 MARCH

Lauren and Matt escorted Brendon Evans to the entrance of the station and then went upstairs to speak to the team.

‘Okay, everyone, we now have three missing women. The latest, Hannah Gifford, didn’t return home after going to a nightclub with a friend. She’s twenty-nine and an event planner.’ She took the pen from the whiteboard and wrote up the woman’s name. ‘Tamsin, please will you put up on the screen the photo of Gifford that I forwarded to you, and also images of the other two women.’

‘Yes, ma’am.’

In a few seconds the screen lit up and the photos were staring back at them.

‘What stands out?’ Lauren asked, scanning the room.

‘Nothing,’ Billy said after a few seconds. ‘They’re all very different in looks and age.’

‘And in occupation,’ Lauren said. ‘So, what’s that telling us?’ she encouraged.

‘Umm… that they were just random victims? They were in the right place at the wrong time,’ Billy said. ‘Or should that be the wrong place at the wrong time? Do you think they’re dead, ma’am, and we now have a serial killer?’

‘We can’t exclude that possibility, but I don’t want to jump the gun. Whoever has them might be keeping them somewhere,’ Lauren said, not wanting the team to give up hope about finding the women alive, even if she was already assuming the worst.

‘Experts on serial killers say that they usually have an “ideal victim” in their mind based on race, gender, looks, or something else about them,’ Clem said.

‘So, you don’t think that’s what we’ve got then, because our victims are different?’ Billy asked, turning to the other officer.

‘Research points out that often serial killings seem random at first because victims have something in common which no one realises straight away, apart from the killer themselves.’

‘Exactly. Thank you, Clem,’ said Lauren. ‘There’s almost definitely something linking the three of them that we’re missing. And that’s what I want you all to concentrate on. Look for anything, however inconsequential it might seem, that ties them together. Sergeant Price and I are heading out to the Magenta nightclub, where Hannah Gifford went on Saturday night.’
